Brian Wall founded StoneCalibre in 2012 with the vision of creating a private investment company focused on building a portfolio of high-calibre companies operating in the lower middle market.
With nearly 20 years of private equity experience, Brian has completed numerous investments across a wide variety of industry sectors including software and technology, telecommunications, transportation and logistics, manufacturing, business services and healthcare. As a long-time Partner at Platinum Equity, Brian was responsible for building both Platinum’s European M&A operations as well as its lower middle market investment team known as the Platinum Vintage Group. During his tenure, he led acquisitions of companies from global Fortune 500 corporations, entrepreneurs and the public equity markets.
Prior to his private equity career, Brian was an acquisition officer for the U.S. Air Force, responsible for acquiring mission critical communication satellites from government contractors in support of the Department of Defense.
Brian’s value system is based on the principles of hard work, mutual respect and taking a long-term view when it comes to both quality people and quality businesses. He resides in Los Angeles, California, with his wife, son, and daughter, holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the United States Air Force Academy with an MBA in Corporate Finance from the University of Southern California.
Usman Shakeel is a Managing Director in the Mergers & Acquisitions group at StoneCalibre. Since joining StoneCalibre in 2012, Usman has been actively involved in identifying, evaluating and executing upon numerous investment opportunities across a myriad of industries including healthcare and life sciences, software and technology, telecommunications, distribution and others. He is responsible for driving all stages of the investment execution process including initial review, due diligence, valuation, financing and structuring, negotiations, legal documentation as well as post-close portfolio company oversight and support.
Prior to joining StoneCalibre, Usman was part of the Mergers & Acquisitions team at Morgan Stanley in Los Angeles where he advised clients on strategic alternatives including mergers & acquisitions, refinancings, initial public offerings and share buybacks. Notable transactions included Molson Coors Brewing Company / StarBev, Joh. A. Benckiser / Peet’s Coffee & Tea, International Game Technology / Double Down Interactive and Leap Wireless.
Usman graduated magna cum laude from the University of Southern California earning dual-degrees with B.S. in Business Administration from the Marshall School of Business and B.S. in Accounting from the Leventhal School of Accounting. He continues to stay involved with the university as a mentor to the students of the undergraduate business school.
Dr. Benjamin Travis is the Chief Executive Officer of CalibreScientific®, and Anatrace Products. After Anatrace was acquired by StoneCalibre in 2013, Ben has assisted StoneCalibre with technical aspects of Life Sciences M&A and has seen the business through five successful transactions since then: Edge BioSystems (2014), Microlytic (2015), Concise Separations (2015), Molecular Dimensions (2017), and Alpha-Tec Systems (2017).
Ben has over 20 years of experience in the life sciences industry. He has worked effectively in both technical and leadership positions and his management style and skills allow him to work cross-functionally between all branches of the organization. At Affymetrix, as the Life Science Reagents R&D Director, Ben was frequently the face and voice of company products for customers across both the USB and Anatrace brands. In this role, he developed the ability to convey technical information to experts and non-experts alike, and translate customer input and scientific trends into new, exciting, viable products.
Ben has developed two patents, authored 15 publications, and has created and conducted numerous presentations at various summits and symposiums across the United States.
James McCloskey joined StoneCalibre as a Managing Director in January of 2013. With over 25 years of experience in the financial and capital markets, Jim has extensive experience as both a direct investor and as an advisor.
Jim’s previous employment was with Cerberus Capital Management, which he joined as a Managing Director in 2003. He soon became the leading force in creating Cerberus’ European operation out of London where he specialized in private equity, lending and restructuring. From late 2006, he moved back to focus on U.S. based private equity, lending and distressed assets. In early 2008, he was requested to relocate to Japan for the restructuring of Cerberus’ portfolio company Aozora Bank Ltd., a global banking institution with ~$100 billion in assets. Jim was an Executive Officer of the bank and served as the Deputy Head of Investment Banking and Head of the International Finance Division with seats on the Management Committee, the Credit Committee and the Equity Investment Committee. His primary responsibilities were to assume the management of an existing ~$7.0 billion portfolio of distressed U.S., European and Asian loans; to manage Aozora’s ~$5.0 billion international private equity portfolio; to source, execute and manage new debt and equity investments worldwide; and, with the other members of the Executive Team, to shepherd Aozora through the global financial crisis.
Prior to joining Cerberus, Jim was an investment banker in UBS Warburg’s Leveraged Finance Group where he originated, structured and executed high yield, leveraged loan and mezzanine financings for sponsors and corporates. He was employed in the same capacity at SG Cowen and at BT Securities where he also specialized in airline restructurings as well as aerospace and defense M&A. He has held positions at Citicorp (Real Estate Restructuring/Special Situations) and TishmanSpeyer Properties (Real Estate).
Jim was born and raised in New York, but has lived in several cities on four continents. He now resides in Los Angeles where he swims competitively in U.S. Masters Swimming events, currently holding U.S. and World Records. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and received his MBA from Columbia Business School at Columbia University, achieving academic distinctions at both.
Mike Drury is the Chief Financial Officer of CalibreScientific®, overseeing the operations’ financial interests. Mike brings over 12 years of CFO/VP experience to the StoneCalibre team and previously served as the CFO of Source Technologies, a StoneCalibre portfolio company. Mike’s prior experience also includes over 16 years at General Electric.
Mike earned his MBA from the Weatherhead School of Management at Case Western Reserve University and his B.B.A in Accounting from Cleveland State University. Mike is a Certified Public Accountant.
